The block was virgin scrub with no fences and had no natural surface water. They named the property Wallangra - 2586ha (6390acres) Brigalow country - 631 Golden’s Road, Wandoan Qld. Hard work was no obstacle to both of them. Roads, boundary & internal fencing, stock dams & turkey nests, sheep & cattle yards, clearing the property & planting improve pastures went on over the years as their income would allow. They rented a house nearby before building their own home. From sheep (wool and fat lambs) to Hereford cattle and soon after they decided to give the Angus breed a go. Over the following years they travelled around to purchase the right base herd, covering eastern Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania and bought the best Angus they could find & afford. They could see the benefit in breeding Angus cattle and with the cattle they purchased, it was not a hard decision to start a registered Angus stud which they did under the name of Wallangra Pastoral Co in 1961. Work began and never stopped for Jack until the day he passed - Christmas day 1980, 2 months before reaching his 75th birthday. 24 years was not long enough to enjoy the fruits of his hard work at Wallangra. Joyce received a lifetime membership award of 50 years, from the Angus Society in 2011. The stud has been operating for 63 years. When asked about how they selected a good beast Joyce would reply “I pick a beast from the eye not from what is written in a catalogue”. On 3rd December 1983 she married Desmond Hodgkinson from Clermont in nth Qld who became her companion for the next 23years. In that time they completely went out of the sheep and concentrated on the Angus cattle. Joyce found herself alone again after Des passed away in 2007. Joyce managed to keep the property going and the stud alive with the help of workers for the next 9 years. Joyce passed away in 2017 at 90 years of age. Unfortunately Joyce & Jack were not blessed with having their own children. Joyces family consisted of a brother, Athol Smith who had 5 daughters, and a step brother who did not marry. She was very close to Athol who visited Wallangra regularly for shearing, fencing & any work that was required. Over the years Jack and Joyce developed a good reputation with their bulls selling them annually on farm - to many repeat buyers. It has been our goal to make an annual bull sale on the property, giving everyone the opportunity to buy a bull or heifer they really like. Each year we are adding new bloodlines with the bulls (and few heifers) to breed what we believe the buyers are looking for. Our focus in the last few years has been to buy low birth weight bulls, together with a good frame, length and a good nature. 2023 and going forward we will focus on the EVBs of the bulls we buy, but still chasing that good strong structure, quiet nature and head. We have been pleased with a good season this year which makes it easier for a bull to progress in weight. We keep the bulls in a paddock so they will be comfortable at their new home walking for grass and water. They have been supplementary fed 4months prior to sale. The heifers are grass feed and look good. They may have a little supplement feeding in the paddock the month prior to sale. These heifers should have no trouble adapting to their new home, with very little change in their diet and conditions, for the birth of their 1st calf. We are always happy to receive any feedback from buyers or potential buyers of the Wallangra cattle – it helps us to understand if we are on the right track for your target bull or breeders offspring. I would like to thank my son Troy Whip who has managed Wallangra for the last 7 years with much help from his fiancee Janette, son Jack, daughter Michelle and also my daughter Juanita for their help. Many thanks to those that assist in making this sale a success, my family, including my sister Kaye, workers, agents, buyers travelling to the property for the sale, and buyers that bid on Auction plus. We are all very proud to be part of the dream my Aunt & Uncle started 63 years ago, from a napkin in a servo, but that is another story … Margaret Whip Wallangra Angus Page 4 2024 ON-PROPERTY AUCTION SALE disclaimer and privacy information Attention Buyer Animal details included in this catalogue, including but not limited to pedigree, DNA information, Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and Index values, are based on information provided by the breeder or owner of the animal.
